Remember: in a sentence with a modal verb, the modal verb is the conjugated verb and the second verb stays in the infinitive at the end: Wir müssen jetzt Hausaufgaben machen.

How to Choose Between dürfen and müssen
- Rules and permission: dürfen. Man darf nicht rauchen means smoking is not allowed. You see this with signs, rules and what parents or teachers allow: im Bahnhof, im Flugzeug, hier parken.
- Obligation: müssen. Ich muss nach Hause gehen means you have to go, because something forces you: homework, a test, time.
- Questions start with the modal verb: Darfst du ...?, Müsst ihr ...?
- Position of the second verb: the infinitive is always at the end of the sentence.
