Würden, hätten and wären are three super important verbs in Konjunktiv II, and this lesson helps you choose the right one every time. In this practice video, Johannes from YourGermanTeacher gives you 15 sentences. Your task is to decide: würden, hätten or wären?

The Three Verbs in Short

How to Choose

  • würden + another verb in the infinitive at the end of the sentence.
  • hätten + a noun (something you would like to have, or a feeling like Angst).
  • wären + an adjective, a noun for a role or a place (something you would like to be).

  • Aber richtig in sentence 4 stresses that you would be really scared in this situation.
  • Wir hätten gern ... and Ich würde gerne etwas fragen are polite phrases you can use in a restaurant or when you ask a question.
  • Am liebsten and lieber work like gern to express preferences: Wo wärst du am liebsten?
