10 Common German Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Heute arbeite ich 8 Uhr. Heute studiere ich Deutsch. Weißt du das Buch? All three sentences are typical German learner mistakes. In this lesson, Luzi from YourGermanTeacher (who has taught German for about 10 years) shows you 10 very common mistakes from beginner to intermediate level. For each one you get two sentence options, the correct answer and a clear rule.
1. Stunde or Uhr?
Heute arbeite ich 8 Stunden. is correct. Heute arbeite ich 8 Uhr. is wrong. Stunde is a duration (hours). Uhr means o'clock, and it can also mean watch. When you give a time, use um plus Uhr: Meine Oma kommt um 14 Uhr. Um 23 Uhr gehe ich schlafen.
2. studieren or lernen?
Heute lerne ich Deutsch. is correct. Studieren is only used for studying at university, for example Was studierst du? – Ich studiere Jura. Use lernen for languages and instruments: Sprachen lernen, ein Instrument lernen.
3. kennen or wissen?
Kennst du das Buch? is correct. Weißt du das Buch? is completely wrong, even if an online translator suggests it.
| Verb | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| kennen | with nouns and pronouns: people, places, food, movies | Kennst du Martin? – Ja, ich kenne ihn. |
| wissen | usually with a subordinate clause (wo, wann, dass, ob ...) | Weißt du, wo er ist? – Nein, aber ich weiß, dass er hier ist. |
4. langweilig or gelangweilt?
Ich bin gelangweilt. means I am bored. Ich bin langweilig. is a correct sentence, but it means I am a boring person. Use langweilig for things: Der Film ist langweilig. Das Buch ist langweilig. Mir ist langweilig is also possible, but Luzi recommends sticking with gelangweilt to avoid confusion.
5. wenn, wann or als?
When you start telling a story about the past, say Als ich jung war ...
| Word | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| wenn | conjunction for conditions (when or if) | Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause. |
| wann | question word | Wann lernst du Deutsch? |
| als | conjunction for one event in the past | Als ich in Köln war, hat es geregnet. |
6. anrufen or telefonieren?
Morgen rufe ich meine Mutter an. is correct. Morgen telefoniere ich meine Mutter. is wrong. Anrufen needs no preposition and takes the accusative: Ich rufe meinen Vater an. Telefonieren is usually used with mit.
7. werden or bekommen?
Bald werde ich Pilot. is correct. Werden means to become in most cases. Bekommen has nothing to do with the English become. It means to get or to receive: Ja, ich habe sie bekommen. (Yes, I got it.)
8. groß or hoch?
Mario ist 1,80 Meter groß. is correct. For the height of people always use groß. Hoch means high, for example for mountains: Wie hoch ist der Berg? – Er ist 3000 Meter hoch.
9. denn or dann?
In a story, use dann for then: Und dann habe ich geschlafen. Denn is similar to weil and means because: Ich habe geschlafen, denn ich war müde. / Ich esse, denn ich habe Hunger.
One difference to weil: after denn the conjugated verb is in second position (main clause). After weil it goes to the end (subordinate clause): weil ich müde war, weil ich Hunger habe.
10. nach or zu?
Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin. is correct. Zu Berlin is wrong.
| Word | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| nach | cities, countries and directions | Ich fahre nach Berlin. / Ich fliege nach Osten. |
| zu | the rest: people, buildings, institutions | Morgen fahre ich zum Supermarkt. / Morgen fahre ich zur Bank. |
Bonus Tip: Vielen Dank, not Vielen Danke
The correct phrase is Vielen Dank. Vielen Danke does not exist. Luzi guesses that the mistake comes from phone autocomplete.
